Stock Heat Shield Removal

  1. Park your car in a flat level area, and allow it to cool down thoroughly.

  2. Lift up on the engine cover and remove it from the vehicle in order to expose the rear of the engine and the turbo heat shield.

  3. Unclip the o2 sensor wire from the heatshield.

  4. Using a 10mm socket remove the nut holding the heatshield onto the center section of the turbocharger.

  5. Remove the 3 bolts holding the heatshield to the cylinderhead.  Two are vertical behind the cam solenoids, and one is horizontal on the back of the cylinder head.

  6. Remove the stock O2 Sensor by unhooking it from the main harness, then using a 22mm o2 sensor wrench or socket.

Turbo Blanket Installation

While not necessary, removing the stock downpipe can make a little bit more room to work with things.

  1. Grab the driver's side of the turbo blanket and gently bunch it together slightly.

  2. Now work it down around the turbocharger feeding the bunched up bit around the side closest to the center cartridge of the turbo.

  3. Now straighten things out and get both flaps back on the firewall side of the engine bay with the top flap coming down.

  4. Loop the springs across the two flaps and then add one up to the top routed around the side of the nub sticking out in order to keep it out of the way of the wastegate actuator.  It's usually easiest to get the small end of the spring attached first then loop the more open side over.

  5. After applying a small amount of anti-seize to the threads, reinstall the factory oxygen sensor, routing the wires through the clips on the firewall as shown before plugging it back in.  You will have slightly more slack so make sure it is out of the way, or secure it with a ziptie.

Heatshield Modification

  1. The factory heatshield protects the oil control solenoids found on the top of the cylinder head so it's a good idea to keep it there.  As such we'll modify it a little in order to make it fit a bit better with the turbo blanket.

  2. Using a grinder, saw or dremel cut along the line as shown in the picture.  Make sure not to cut through any of the spot-welds in order to keep as much of the multi layered shield as strong as possible.

  3. After cutting and smoothing down the cut edge so it isn't sharp, reinstall the shield in place (you can leave out the 10mm bolt used previously as it is no longer needed.  It's usually easist to lower it into place with the vertical bolts already in their holes in order to line things up.

  4. You're all done!! Go out and enjoy!
