Installation of COBB Shift Plate
- First we'll want to remove the factory airbox so we can gain access to the shift weight sitting on top of the transmission. To do so, use an 8mm socket to remove the four bolts that secure the lid of the box in place. They loosen but are captured in the lid so they will stay attached when loose. Once loosened remove the lid from the engine bay.
- Disconnect the MAP sensor attached to the box as well.
- Using an 8mm socket, loosen the clamp that secures the airbox to the turbo inlet tube until there is slack. Socket size may vary depending on the intake that is installed.
- Remove the air filter and set it aside.
- Undo the strap in front of the box taht secures the fresh air inlets. Remove each inlet by pulling them away from the box.
- Carefully remove the airbox by pulling it up and outward. It is held in place by three mounts. Set the box to the side.
- You now have access to the shift linkage and weight. Using a large flathead screwdriver or trim tool, pop the shift linkage carefully off of the ball stud on top of the shift weight.
- Using a marker, make several lines on the top of the shift weight that cross over to the pivotpoint which can enable you to more easily install the weight upon reinstallation.
- Using the longer hex head screw as a punch, slowly start tapping the roll pin out of the shift weight. It may be helpful to use the pliers in order to hold the screw in place so that you don't hit your fingers. Continue hitting the roll pin out until you can remove pull the weight free, you may not need to remove it all the way. Be sure not to launch the pin off into the engine bay when it comes out, as you will need it again. Once it's out, remove the screw and pull the shift weight out of the car.
- Place the COBB shift plate onto the weight, then using a small dab of loctite on the flat headed screws, secure the bottom plate to the top sandwiching it around the shift weight.
- Using a small dab of loctite and the nylon washer, install the ball stud into the desired position. The hole closest to the factory point is a 30% reduction and the next hole is 40%. As you increase the reduction, the effort required to shift will increase.
- Use a drop of loctite and install the set screw in the side of the shift plate and tighten until nothing moves around any longer.
- Tap the roll pin back in to the weight so that it isn't quite popping out into the middle section, this will make it much easier to install once it's on the car.
- Lining up the marks from eariler, reinstall the shift weight onto the car and gently tap the roll pin back into place. Go slow and make sure you're lined up as you don't want to damage anything.
- Reinstall the shifter linkage cable onto the ball joint on the COBB Shift Plate.
- Now is a good time to reset the neutral position, so go ahead and unclip this small white clip on the shifter cable here, it should pull out about 1/4"
- Now with that opened shift the shifter into fourth gear. Now push the clip back in and return the car to the neutral position.
- Reinstall the airbox in the reverse order of removal.
- Go out and enjoy!
