The downpipes are currently only designed for fitment on a LHD vehicle
Congratulations on your purchase of the COBB Tuning Volkswagen MK7 Catback / Downpipe. The following instructions will assist you through your installation process. Please read them first BEFORE beginning the install and familiarize yourself with the steps and tools needed. If you feel that you cannot properly perform this installation, we HIGHLY recommend you take the vehicle to a qualified and experienced automotive technician.
Begin by using a 13mm wrench or socket to remove the the two chassis braces. Also, remove the bolts attaching the downpipe mount to the front sub frame assembly.
Loosen the factory clamp connecting the stock downpipe to the stock cat back exhaust using a 13mm socket.
Take a 6mm hex socket and loosen the clamp holding the downpipe to the turbo housing. Unclip the O2 sensor connector and remove the harness from the 3 clips on the firewall.
Remove the oxygen sensor from the downpipe using a 22mm oxygen sensor socket.
From the bottom of the car, you will see a bracket that attaches the downpipe to the engine. Take off both nuts holding the downpipe to this bracket. Use a 13mm socket.
Now remove the exhaust from the middle hanger. (NOTE: The brace should be removed already, just used as a picture reference.)
Using a 13mm socket, remove the bolts holding the remaining two hangers in place. Once these are removed be ready for the exhaust to come out! NOTE: This is easier (and more safe) with two people! It may be easier to remove the catback first, then the downpipe. Also remember which hanger was used in each location, these will be used to install the COBB Catback.
Installation of COBB Volkswagen MK7 Turboback
With the downpipe out of the way, remove the factory plastic ABS module heat shield. This should pop off from the module itself.
Next, remove the upper and front lower ABS module mounting nuts as well as the screw on metal clip holding the O2 sensor wiring. Place the Cobb heat shield over these bolts and tighten back down.
To install the COBB Turboback, begin by installing the COBB Downpipe. Before you place it in the car, it is easier if you go ahead and thread on the O2 sensor and tighten. You can clip the connector in once the installation is complete. Also, go ahead and place the mounting grommets onto the COBB Downpipe bracket before installation. (Note: Please make sure that the O2 sensor wiring harness does not touch the downpipe.)
Take the COBB Downpipe and snake the front flange portion up through the car and to the turbo flange. Take the two stock bolts that were used to hold the grommets in place and connect the mounting grommets to the stock location. Use a 13mm socket to tighten.
From the engine bay, you can now line up the flanges from the downpipe and the turbo housing and use the stock clamp to connect the two parts together. Use a 6mm hex socket to tighten. Do not tighten completely at this point to allow for adjustment. Be sure to clip in the O2 sensor connector once the downpipe is installed!
With the COBB Downpipe now installed, you can follow the install instructions for the COBB Catback or reverse the steps to reinstall the stock catback. The only difference between these two variations is the connecting piece. With the stock catback you will use the same stock tube connector that held the stock downpipe to the stock catback. With the COBB Catback, you will use the 8" midpipe and a few clamps as shown below.
Once everything is installed, double check that all fasteners are tightened.
Installation of COBB Volkswagen MK7 Catback with Stock Downpipe
Begin by laying out all of the parts for the catback in the orientation that it will be installed on the car. Use the picture below for a reference.
Take the rear hanger grommets and place on the rear hangers of the COBB Catback. Make sure you place them on the same side you took them off.
Now go ahead and assemble the catback before you place it in the car. Be sure to slide on the clamps where each slip joint is.
To install the catback onto the car, begin by inserting the front end into the stock tube clamp connecting the catback to the downpipe.
Take the stock bolts used to hold up the rear hanger grommets and a 13mm ratchet to screw in to the stock location to support the rear of the catback.
Place the middle hanger into the stock hanger and also add on the new hanger included with your catback kit to the new location.
Once the COBB Catback is in the correct location and the tips look the way you desire, tighten all of the clamps around the slip fit joints with a 13mm ratchet.
Make sure that all bolts and clamps are tight before you reinstall the braces that you previously removed.
Double check to make sure all of the nuts and bolts are tight. Enjoy your new COBB Tuning Catback!
Installation of COBB Volkswagen MK7 Downpipe with Stock Catback
Reference steps 1-3 of the "Removal of Stock Turboback" section to reference how the stock downpipe is removed. The only brace that needs to be removed is the one shown below.
Now, disconnect the downpipe from the catback by loosening the tube clamp seen behind the bracket in the picture above. Use a 13mm socket to do so.
You should now be able to take the stock downpipe out of the car.
Follow steps 1-4 of the "Installation of COBB Volkswagen MK7 Turboback" section to reference how to install the COBB Downpipe. The only difference is that you will now attach the slip joint reducer to the downpipe and attach using a clamp.
Once these steps are complete, you can now attach the COBB Downpipe to the stock catback using the stock tube clamp.
Double check to make sure all of the nuts and bolts are tight. Enjoy your new COBB Tuning Downpipe!
