Removal of Stock Front Sway Bar

  1. Remove the underbody plastic tray.  The underbody tray is secured by 8mm screws.  Remove them using your ratchet and 8mm socket.

On the 1 Series Cars there will be one additional bolt on the side of the subframe holding it in.

  2. Unbolt the sway bar from the endlinks on both sides.  This will require the use of a 17mm and 16mm wrench.

  3. Unbolt the sway bar bracket from the sub-frame on both sides using a 13mm socket.

  4. Remove the sway bar by twisting and moving it to one side of the car.  Take note of the position and orientation of the OEM sway bar before removal.  This will help position the new bar.

Installation of the COBB Front Sway Bar

  1. Prepare the new front sway bar for installation.  Attach the two bracket bushings onto the sway bar.  The sway bar bushings split open and can be positioned around the sway bar. Apply generous amounts of the supplied grease to the inside of the bushings before attaching onto the sway bar.

  2. Slide and twist the sway bar into place underneath the car.

  3. Take the original metal bushing brackets and put them over the new rubber bushings and bolt the sway bar onto the sub-frame of the car with the 13mm socket.

  4. Reattach the sway bar to the endlinks on each side and make sure all bolts are tightened.

  5. Reinstall the front plastic underbody tray.

Removal of Stock Rear Sway Bar

  1. Remove the 8 x T50 Torx bolts and 2 x 18mm bolts holding the chassis brace to the car.
Sedans do not have the x brace and therefore will not require removal of the additional 18mm bolts.

  2. Remove the exhaust system. (See our catback installation instructions for tips! 5B1130 - COBB Cat-Back Exhaust E9x BMW 335i)
  3. Remove the rear wheels.

  4. Unbolt the stock sway bar from the endlinks using two 16mm wrenches.  On some vehicles you may need a thinner 16mm wrench to fit.

  5. Detach the brake lines and plug the brake lines.

  6. Loosen the ABS wire from their clips and loosen the emergency brake cable lines from their hooks.

  7. Disconnect the leveling sensor from the driver side control arm.

  8. Remove rear heat shield.  There are 4 10mm screws that will need to be removed.

  9. Position a jack or stand underneath the differential.

  10. Loosen all the sub-frame bolts from the sub frame starting in the rear by using an E18 Torx Socket
Exercise caution as once all the bolts are removed the entire rear subframe is able to fall.

  11. Next use a T30 socket to remove the plastic covering the front subframe bolts.  Using an E18 inverted Torx bit and a 16mm socket, remove the front subframe bolts.

  12. Lower the subframe 4-6 inches using the jack being careful not to pull on any wires or damage the driveshaft.

  13. Unbolt the sway bar brackets from the top of the subframe using a 10mm wrench of socket.  There should be two on each side.

  14. Note the location and orientation of the OEM sway bar.  Wiggle and twist it out of one side of the vehicle.

Installation of the COBB Rear Sway Bar.

  1. Prepare the new front sway bar for installation.  Attach the two bracket bushings onto the sway bar.  The sway bar bushings split open and can be positioned around the sway bar. Apply generous amounts of the supplied grease to the inside of the bushings before attaching onto the sway bar.

  2. Using the same techniques utilized to remove it from the car wiggle the new sway bar into place in the same orientation as the OEM one.  The orientation must be correct in order for the new sway bar to be installed properly, if incorrect it may hit on factory components and cause a noise or damage.
This can be difficult and gets easier when the subframe is further away from the car.

  3. Put the OEM sway bar brackets of the bushings and attach the sway bar to the subframe using the original bolts and 10mm socket.

  4. Once complete you can put everything back together in the opposite order of removal.  Making sure to bleed the brakes afterwards before driving.

  5. You're all done!  Go out and enjoy!
