Congratulations on your purchase of the COBB Tuning VW MK7 Golf R catted downpipe! The following instructions will assist you through the installation process. Please read them BEFORE beginning the install to familiarize yourself with the steps and tools needed. If you feel you cannot properly perform this installation, we HIGHLY recommend you take the vehicle to a qualified and experienced automotive technician.

IMPORTANT! Installing this kit will require custom tuning or utilizing an appropriate Stage Power Package map if you have a matching mechanical configuration. Please consult with COBB or an authorized ProTuner in your area if you have any questions!

Tools Needed


  • ½" 17mm Socket
  • ½" 16mm Socket
  • ⅜" 13mm Socket
  • ⅜" 10mm 12pt Socket
  • M10 Triple square XZN socket
  • 8mm Hex key
  • 6mm Hex key
  • 18” Extension
  • 6” Extension
  • 12” Extension
  • ½" Torque wrench

  • ⅜"  Torque wrench
  • Pry bar
  • O2 sensor wrench
  • ⅜" Swivel



Remove the Stock Downpipe



  1. Remove the front passenger side wheel using a 17mm socket and factory lock key (if equipped).

       

  2. Remove the V-band clamp securing the turbo exhaust housing to the downpipe using a 6mm hex key.

          

  3. Remove the stock turbo heatshield by gently pulling up on the bottom tab.

       

  4. Remove the O2 sensor from the DP using an O2 sensor removal tool.

       

  5. Remove the CV axle heatshield using a ¼” 8mm hex key with an 16” extension and swivel.

             

  6. Remove the driveshaft heatshield using a ⅜” 16mm socket with an 16” extension and swivel.

       

  7. Remove the top left driveshaft heatshield bolt using a ⅜” 10mm triple square XZN socket and 16” extension.

       

  8. Remove the (3) driveshaft bolts using a ⅜” 10mm 12pt and 12” extension
    1. NOTE: In order to access each bolt easily, hold one wheel while spinning the other to rotate the driveshaft.
    2. NOTE: The bolts are torqued to about 40 ft/lbs, so it may be difficult to remove them the first time around. We found that it can be helpful to either use an impact to crack them or have someone stand on the brake pedal to prevent the driveshaft from spinning.

         

  9. Remove the (2) lower engine mount bolts using a 16mm socket.

       

  10. Using a pry bar, leverage the engine forward and the driveshaft backwards to separate them. Once separated, you can slide the driveshaft over to disconnect it completely and allow the engine to shift back.

          

  11. Remove the (2) nuts securing the downpipe using a 13mm socket and 18” extension and swivel.



  12. Remove the OEM exhaust clamp holding the downpipe to catback using a 13mm socket.

       

  13. Remove the (2) downpipe hanger bolts using a 13mm socket.

       

  14. Remove the OEM downpipe assembly.
    1. Due to the size of the stock assembly, you’ll need to twist and finagle it out. The only component you should be cautious of damaging is the O2 sensor.

            



Install the COBB Downpipe


  1. Remove the right side 13mm nut retaining the ABS bracket.

       

  2. Remove the 13mm nut on the underside of the ABS module.

       

  3. Unclip the O2 wiring from the retaining clip.

       

  4. Remove the O2 wiring clip.

       

  5. Install the COBB heatshield and secure it using the (3) OEM 13mm nuts.

          

  6. Reconnect the driveshaft and secure with the (3) OEM 16mm bolts. Torque to 36nm.
    1. NOTE: Make certain that the driveshaft is seated/aligned to the transmission prior to bolting it down.



  7. Reinstall the OEM heatshield using the OEM 10mm triple square XZN socket and 16mm socket.

       

  8. Secure the (2) lower engine mount bolts using a 16mm socket.. Torque to 72Nm.

       

  9. Reinstall the CV axle heathshield using the OEM 8mm hex key

       

  10. Transfer the downpipe mounting bracket from the OEM downpipe to the COBB downpipe

             

  11. Install the new downpipe and secure it with the mounting bracket and the (2) OEM 13mm nuts

       

  12. Unclip the O2 sensor wire from the wire channel.
    1. NOTE: We’re doing this so as to keep the wire from sitting on the hot side of the turbo.

         

  13. Using a small amount of anti-seize on the threads of the O2 sensor, reinstall the sensor to the COBB downpipe.

             

  14. Attach the downpipe to the hot side of the turbo with the OEM clamp.

       

  15. Insert the appropriate adapter for your catback in the COBB midpipe.
    1. NOTE: In our example, we’re utilizing the stock catback so we’re using the smaller adapter.

            

  16. Install the midpipe between the downpipe and catback.
    1. NOTE: Verify that the orientation of the midpipe is correct. It should have a downward angle as it goes from the catback to the downpipe.

         

  17. Reinstall the passenger side wheel.

       

  18. Flash the appropriate mapping to your ECU and enjoy!
